Why one tray is S$1.50 and another S$22

The spread is about fifteen times, and almost all of it is material and thickness. At the bottom, a 15 x 15 x 1cm bamboo square is thin, light and made to be handed out in volume. At the top, a solid wood tray is cut from one piece, has depth to its walls and weight in the hand, and will outlast the event it was bought for. Melamine sits between: moulded rather than cut, so it takes a full-colour printed face that wood cannot, at a price closer to bamboo than oak.

Melamine for service, wood for gifting

Material decides the use more than size does. Melamine wipes clean, survives being stacked wet and takes an edge-to-edge print, which is why cafes use it. Solid wood and bamboo take laser engraving, where the mark is burned into the grain and cannot lift, but they should not be left soaking. Ceramic display trays print like a plate, with a glazed face. There is also a vegan leather tray for desk use, and two turned wooden bowls if you want depth.

Tray questions from cafes and offices

Which takes a full-colour logo?
Melamine and ceramic. On wood and bamboo the engraved mark is a single burnt tone, which suits a crest or wordmark better than a multi-colour design.

Can they go in a dishwasher?
Melamine and ceramic, yes. Wood and bamboo should be wiped rather than soaked, or the grain lifts over time.

Is there a tray big enough for a full table setting?
The 40 x 30 x 3cm is the largest here. Below that, 28 x 21cm suits a two-cup service and the 15 x 15cm squares are coaster-sized.
